How length conversion works

To convert between two units you multiply by a fixed conversion factor — the number of target units in one source unit. The core factors are:

• 1 inch = 2.54 cm (exact)
• 1 foot = 0.3048 m (exact) = 12 inches
• 1 yard = 0.9144 m = 3 feet
• 1 mile = 1609.344 m = 1.609344 km
• 1 metre = 3.28084 feet = 39.3701 inches
• 1 kilometre = 0.621371 miles

Worked example

To convert 5 kilometres to miles, multiply by the km→mi factor:

5 km × 0.621371 = 3.10686 miles

To go the other way, divide by the same factor (or multiply by 1.609344): 3.10686 mi × 1.609344 = 5 km.
